Man fined for marrying again without permission

PETALING JAYA • A man in the Malaysian state of Kelantan who married an 11-year-old child has been fined RM1,800 (S$610) by the Gua Musang Syariah Court.

Harian Metro reported that the man was charged with solemnising a marriage and polygamy without obtaining the court's permission. The man already has two wives. He pleaded guilty to both charges.

The rubber tapper had sparked controversy when he married the 11-year-old in southern Thailand on June 18, with one activist labelling the groom a "child predator".


Pompeo visits Hanoi and Kabul for talks

HANOI • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo raised the issue of a detained American man of Vietnamese descent during meetings with senior Vietnamese officials in Hanoi yesterday, said his spokesman.

Mr William Anh Nguyen was detained last month in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City following mass protests sparked by concerns that plans to develop economic zones by offering land leases for up to 99 years would be dominated by investors from China.

Mr Pompeo later made an unannounced visit to Kabul for talks with Afghan leaders, an Afghan official said, amid renewed optimism for peace in the war-weary country.


Taiwan scurries ahead of storm's arrival

TAIPEI • Ferries were suspended and farmers rushed to carry out last-minute harvests yesterday as Taiwan braced itself for Typhoon Maria, with warnings of possible mudslides and flooding as the storm nears.

Typhoon Maria was 1,100km east-south-east of the capital Taipei, with gusts of up to 200kmh as of 2.30pm local time.

The weather bureau predicted the typhoon's impact would be strongest tonight and tomorrow morning

Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong said no evacuations have taken place so far, but warned that heavy rains posed the risk of floods and mudslides.
