Death toll rises in India as storms wreak havoc

NEW DELHI • At least nine people were killed when a three-storey building collapsed in heavy rains in a Mumbai suburb yesterday.

Officials said 32 people were killed by lightning a day earlier in India's eastern state of Odisha.

China probes Japanese man for alleged spying

BEIJING • China's Foreign Ministry said it is investigating a Japanese man suspected of "endangering China's national security". The latest irritant in ties between the two nations comes as Japanese media reported that the man had been detained in China.

Endangering security is often code for suspected espionage.

HK politician barred from next month's polls

HONG KONG • Mr Chan Ho Tin, from the pro-independence Hong Kong National Party, has been disqualified from standing in next month's Legislative Council elections.

His application was "invalidated" after he refused to sign a new form saying the city is an "inalienable" part of China.
