Deal on China-Thailand high-speed rail link

BANGKOK • China and Thailand agreed yesterday that the first phase of a planned high-speed railway project will cost 179 billion baht (S$7 billion), said Thailand's Transport Minister.

Both countries have also called for closer ties following rocky negotiations.

The 873km rail line will link the Thai border with Laos to ports and industrial zones in Thailand's east. REUTERS

Cambodia deports 13 Taiwanese to China

SHANGHAI • Cambodia has deported 13 Taiwanese nationals suspected of telecoms fraud to China, the Ministry of Public Security in Beijing has said, ignoring protests from Taiwan asking the South-east Asian country not to proceed.

The Public Security Ministry on Tuesday said 50 Chinese nationals were also sent back with the Taiwanese deportees.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said late on Tuesday that it had protested strongly against the deportation of Taiwanese nationals to China and that Cambodia had been pressured by China. REUTERS

India set to buy new fighter jets for air force

NEW DELHI • An Indian ministerial panel is said to have approved the purchase of 36 new fighter jets made by France's Dassault Aviation, concluding a major step in its decade-long quest to modernise the country's air force.

The Cabinet Committee on Security, which includes the prime minister and defence, foreign and finance ministers, has cleared the deal worth €8 billion (S$12 billion) for Rafale fighter jets, sources said.

The deal is likely to be signed later this week in New Delhi. BLOOMBERG
