'A few hundred' Chinese tourists fall into river as bridge collapses in Hunan

BEIJING - A few hundred Chinese tourists fell into a fast-flowing river in Peach Island in Fenghuang island, a tourist site in central China's Hunan province, after a suspension bridge they were crossing collapsed, Hong Kong's Phoenix TV reported on Wednesday. There has been no report yet of any casualty.

The broadcaster said the tourists had just left a barbecue party on the island and had crowded on the bridge when the accident happened.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said some tourists were already rescued after the accident happened at around 9.10pm in Fenghuang county, Hunan Province, but it remained unclear if there were injuries.

Some users of Sina Weibo, a popular microblogging service, said many people were on the bridge when the accident happened.
