LOS ANGELES • A gunman killed three people and hurt 14 others at a lawnmower factory in Kansas on Thursday before being gunned down by police, according to a police official who said the gunman was an employee at Excel Industries in Hesston, a tight-knit community north of Wichita.

LOS ANGELES • The months-long natural gas leak that forced thousands of Los Angeles residents from their homes ranks as the largest known accidental methane release in US history. It is equal to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of nearly 600,000 cars, scientists reported on Thursday.
