Australia has 'turned away over 600 boat people

SYDNEY • Australia yesterday said20 refugee boats carrying 633people had been turned awayfrom its shores since 2013, as itmarked a year since a successful arrival under its hardline immigration policies. Taking a tough line since comingto power, it has turned back vesselswhenpossible in military-led operations.

US boy, 11, charged over fatal shooting of toddler

CHICAGO • An11-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter over the fatal shooting of a toddler in Detroit, media said on Wednesday. The three-year-old boy was allegedly shot in the face on Monday, and pronounced dead onarrival at a hospital. Police said they had been playing with the gun, saidCBS Detroit.
