7 charged over fatal shooting of woman in KL

KUALA LUMPUR • Six men and a woman were charged in a magistrate's court yesterday over the shooting of a woman on July 6, one of a recent spate of street killings that has alarmed Malaysians.

Datin Renyce Wong Siu Ling, 32, was driving when she was shot and killed. Two of the men were charged with murder, the others with abetting the murder.

Dozens die in South Asia floods, millions displaced

GUWAHATI (India)/DHAKA (Bangladesh)• At least 17 people have been killed by heavy rains and flooding in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, while at least 14 people have died in Bangladesh, with millions of people also displaced, officials said yesterday.

Persistent heavy rains this week have caused widespread disruption across South Asia, with at least 68 people killed in Nepal by flash floods and landslides.

China detains Japanese for 'being security threat'

TOKYO • Beijing said it has detained and questioned a Japanese national working on cultural exchange projects for allegedly "endangering China's national security", Japanese newspapers reported yesterday.

The man, missing since mid-July, was identified by the Nikkei business daily as the head of an organisation working to improve ties between the two rivals.
