Donald Trump discusses border wall with Mexico's President, no mention of who pays

Donald Trump told Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto that the United States has the right to build a border wall to halt illegal immigration, but the Republican presidential candidate did not bring up his demand that Mexico pay for it.

In an unexpected trip to a country which he has frequently vilified for illegal immigration and drug smuggling, Trump held talks with the Mexican leader at his residence for about an hour.

In campaign rallies for the Nov 8 election, the New York businessman frequently tells approving crowds that Mexico must pay for his planned wall.

Pena Nieto told Trump that Mexicans deserved respect.

Cuba welcomes first commercial flight from US in over 50 years

The first regular commercial flight in more than 50 years from the United States landed in Cuba, as the two nations took the latest step in their efforts to boost ties.

JetBlue Flight 387 landed in the central Cuban city of Santa Clara a little before 11am (11pm Singapore time), about an hour after leaving Fort Lauderdale in southeastern Florida with 150 passengers on board.

The first two passengers off the plane carried US and Cuban flags as they descended the stairs onto the tarmac, where they symbolically exchanged the banners in a sign of friendship.

Samsung launches new Gear S3 smartwatch

With rumours that Apple might be unveiling Apple Watch 2, Samsung has jumped the gun and launched a new smartwatch, the Gear S3.

It will come in two designs - a rugged, outdoorsy version called the Gear S3 Frontier, and a more minimalist and elegant model known as Gear S3 Classic.

The South Korean electronics giant announced the smartwatches ahead of the annual consumer electronics trade show, IFA, in Berlin, Germany.

Football: Champions Leicester break club record for striker Islam Slimani

Premier League champions Leicester City paid a club record fee for Sporting Lisbon's Algeria striker Islam Slimani just hours before the transfer window closed.

The player has moved for an initial €30 million (S$45 million) with a further five million in add ons, Sporting said on their website (www.sporting.pt). That eclipses the fee the Midlands club paid for Nigerian forward Ahmed Musa last month.

The 28-year-old Slimani has joined Leicester on a five-year deal, said a statement on City's website.

Selena Gomez cuts short tour to treat lupus effects

Teen television star turned singer Selena Gomez has cut short a world tour as she handles the after-effects of lupus.

The 24-year-old revealed a year ago that she had secretly undergone chemotherapy to treat lupus, a chronic disease in which the body's immune system fights healthy tissue.

"I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off," she said in a statement.
