Belgian troops shot a suspected "terrorist" bomber in Brussels Central Station but there were no other casualties and the situation was brought under control after people were evacuated, officials said.
Federal prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters some three hours after the incident that a small blast was being treated as a" "terrorist attack. He said it was still unclear if the man was dead and his identity was still unknown.
He declined to comment on witness accounts that he had shouted Islamist slogans, including "Allahu Akbar" - God is greater, in Arabic - before detonating a device on a luggage trolley in an underground concourse of the rail station.
Police had quickly evacuated the station and surrounding areas of historic downtown Brussels after the incident around 8.30pm (2.30am on Wednesday, Singapore time).
The streets had been busy with tourists and locals enjoying a hot evening but were soon largely deserted and calm. Rail traffic was largely suspended.
China invites Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner to visit: US official

China's overture appeared aimed at deepening engagement with the influential young couple, who played a role in the first summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April, which set an improved tone for relations between the world's two biggest economies.
Kushner, a senior adviser who entered the White House with no government experience, has been assigned the job of conducting Middle East peace diplomacy and will visit the region this week for talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Helping to manage relations with China is another part of his foreign policy portfolio.

UN Refugee agency special envoy Angelina Jolie marked World Refugee Day on Tuesday at a Kenyan home housing refugee girls who fled unaccompanied or split from their parents while fleeing conflict.
The Hollywood star visited at least 20 of girls in a safe house in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
They had fled conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Somalia, Burundi and Rwanda, UNHCR said in a statement. It said almost all had experienced sexual and gender-based violence and many had given birth after being raped or were pregnant.

Day-Lewis, the only man to have won three lead actor Oscars, gave no reason for his decision, calling it private.
