Man scales Trump Tower, New York police mobilise

A man was actively scaling Trump Tower in New York using suction cups and prompting a police response outside the Manhattan headquarters of the Republican nominee for president.

Television footage broadcast by ABC News showed the shaggy-haired man dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, apparently using suction cups to mount his ascent.

Police said they had no immediate information about the person's identity or his motive for scaling the glass skyscraper. They were alerted by the incident at around 3.40pm (3.40am on Thursday, Singapore time).

Two planes land safely at Brussels airport after bomb threats

Two aircraft landed safely at Brussels' Zaventem airport after receiving bomb threats, the Belgian state broadcaster VRT reported.

State prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt said his office had received information about possible bomb alerts and had opened an investigation, but declined to provide details. He said the bomb squad had not been called to the airport.

VRT said both planes, one of which was flying from Oslo, landed safely.

Dubai plane crash survivor hits $1 million jackpot

It's been an eventful few days for Mohammad Basheer Abdul Khadar, an Indian living in Dubai.

In the space of a week, he survived a crash landing at Dubai airport then won US$1 million (S$1.3 million) in a lottery organised by the airport's duty free operator, Gulf News reported.

The 62-year-old was flying home from holidays with family in India when the Boeing 777 in which he was travelling caught fire on landing with 300 people on board.

Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja fined $400 for lion selfies

Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja has been fined US$300 (S$400) for taking selfies with endangered Asiatic lions in the country's west despite a ban on such photos, a senior forest official said.

Officials had ordered an investigation in June after photos of Jadeja posing in front of a pride of lions during a safari in Gir forest went viral on social media.

In one of the photos on Instagram, the all-rounder is seen smiling and pointing at a pride of big cats resting behind him with a caption "family photo, having good time in Sasan (Gir)". Another is a selfie of Jadeja and his wife as a lion looks on in the background.

Boxing: Pacquiao confirms Nov 5 fight against Vargas

Manny Pacquiao confirmed he will come out of retirement to fight World Boxing Organisation welterweight champion Jessie Vargas on Nov 5 in Las Vegas.

The 37-year-old Pacquiao, also a senator in the Philippines, issued a statement to announce his comeback opponent.

"Yes, the fight is on," Pacquiao said in the statement. "Boxing is my passion. I miss what I'd been doing inside the gym and atop the ring."
