US President Obama, German Chancellor Merkel make case for huge US-EU trade deal

US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a joint pitch Sunday for more transatlantic trade in the face of mounting opposition, vowing to complete a vast US-EU pact that could spur much-needed economic growth.

After talks in the northern city of Hanover where tens of thousands marched Saturday against the planned deal, Obama said the world's largest trade pact could be finalised by the end of the year.

"Angela and I agree that the United States and the European Union need to keep moving forward with the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations," Obama said.

A tough-talking Philippine presidential candidate vowed to kill his children if they ever took drugs during a televised debate Sunday, as analysts warned his scandalous remarks about raping a missionary could hurt his chances.

Rodrigo Duterte has become the surprise favourite to succeed President Benigno Aquino after making a name for himself in a southern Philippine city infamous for vigilante death squads.

The 71-year-old mayor of Davao has promised to crack down hard on the Philippines' criminals, and on Sunday he vowed to be a harsh president if elected next month.

Football: Leonardo Ulloa nudges Leicester closer to title, Arsenal held

Leicester City need just five points to complete their fairytale Premier League title quest after Leonardo Ulloa scored twice in a 4-0 home victory over Swansea City on Sunday.

With top scorer Jamie Vardy suspended, his stand-in Ulloa stepped up with a brace of goals at the King Power Stadium, either side of efforts from Riyad Mahrez and substitute Marc Albrighton.

It lifted Claudio Ranieri's side eight points clear of second-place Tottenham Hotspur, who host West Bromwich Albion on Monday, and means that they can claim the title by winning at Manchester United next Sunday if Spurs fail to beat West Brom.

Football: Wickham sends Crystal Palace to final showdown with Manchester United

Crystal Palace will face Manchester United in their first FA Cup final for 26 years after Connor Wickham sealed a 2-1 win over Watford at Wembley on Sunday.

Alan Pardew's side swept into an early lead in the semi-final through Congo forward Yannick Bolasie before Watford's Troy Deeney equalised soon after the interval.

Palace were the better team for long periods and Wickham settled it midway through the second half to give his club a chance to avenge their 1990 FA Cup final loss against United, who are looking to win the competition for the first time since 2004 after beating Everton on Saturday.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal equals Vilas clay record with ninth Barcelona title

Rafael Nadal equalled Argentine legend Guillermo Vilas's record of 49 clay-court titles with his ninth Barcelona Open after overcoming defending champion Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday.

Fresh from winning the Monte Carlo Masters last week, Nadal has now won his opening 10 matches of the European clay-court season ahead of his quest to land a record 10th French Open in June.

Nishikori was left to rue a series of missed break-point opportunities as the Japanese's 14-match winning streak in Barcelona came to an end.
