CHICAGO (NYTIMES) - A male student opened fire at a middle school in suburban Indianapolis on Friday (May 25) morning, local authorities said, injuring another student and a teacher.
The suspect was taken into custody, police said.
Police chief Kevin Jowitt said officers received a call of an active shooter at Noblesville West Middle School just after 9am.
The shooting came a week after 10 people were fatally shot at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, an episode that revived a national debate about school safety and gun rights.
Outside Noblesville West, about 50km north of downtown Indianapolis, dozens of police officers from several agencies gathered Friday morning. Gov. Eric Holcomb said around 100 Indiana state troopers were available to assist, and members of Congress sent expressions of sympathy.
"My prayers are w/the Noblesville community, especially those who are injured & those who witnessed an active shooter situation- something no one should ever have to go through. Especially children," Republican Representative Susan W. Brooks said in a Twitter message.
Vice-President Mike Pence, a former Indiana governor, praised the police response in his own message.
"Karen and I are praying for the victims of the terrible shooting in Indiana," Pence said on Twitter. "To everyone in the Noblesville community - you are on our hearts and in our prayers. Thanks for the swift response by Hoosier law enforcement and first responders."
Students from the middle school were taken to a local high school, where police later investigated a separate threat.
Jowitt said there were no reports of violence at the high school.
Beth Niedermeyer, the Noblesville schools superintendent, described a fast by response by teachers and police officers to the gunshots at the middle school.
"We're so grateful that everyone was so quick to respond and help us through this tragedy," Niedermeyer said.
Lieutenant Bruce Barnes of the Noblesville police said more information would be released later on Friday.
"We ask for your prayers for the victims in this case," Barnes said, including "all these other kids that are trying to make sense of this situation."
