UNITED STATES (Reuters) - The largest US auto recall ever just keeps getting bigger. US government documents show six automakers are recalling nearly 2.5 million vehicles with defective air bag inflators from Takata.

In all, roughly 16 million vehicles have been recalled in the US since last week. It all stems from the Japanese auto parts maker's move last month to declare up to 40 million US inflators defective.

The six automakers saying they're recalling vehicles on Thursday (June 2) including GM, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz USA, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, and Daimler Vans.

TrueCar's president, Eric Lyman said: "Well, clearly, I think, all of the automakers are going to revisit their relationship with Takata over the long term."

GM's 2007-2011 pick ups and sport utilities account for the bulk of the latest recalls. The auto maker says it's doing so even though it doesn't believe the inflators made for GM vehicles pose a safety risk. GM wouldn't say how many US vehicles with Takata inflators it may have to recall by 2019.

All this comes just one day after a Senate report said four auto makers were selling some new vehicles equipped with defective Takata inflators.
