Shrinking base of white blue-collar voters makes it harder for Trump

Demographic shifts across the United States have changed the composition of the electorate, seemingly to President Donald Trump's disadvantage. But patterns in voter registration and turnout vary by race and will shape the outcome on Nov 3.

On the face of it, these trends favour the Democratic Party, given the tendency for minorities to vote Democrat.

"The Republican Party faces a dim future, as the groups supporting it shrink in size while those opposing it grow in number," said Harvard University political scientist Thomas Patterson in a commentary in The Boston Globe.
