Sanders warns of 'real threat' of oligarchy in US

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders rails against what he says is the growing threat of oligarchy in the United States during a rally in Paducah, Kentucky.

KENTUCKY, USA (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders told supporters in Paducah, Kentucky, on Sunday (May 15) that the United States is heading toward becoming an oligarchy state.

"You all know what oligarchy is about is a handful of wealthy families controlling the economic and political life of this nation," he said.

"If anybody here thinks that we are not heading in that direction where a handful of billionaires and Wall Street and multinational corporations controlling the economic and political life of this nation, if you don't think that is what is happening right now you are not paying attention."

The US senator from Vermont hopes for a victory in Kentucky when voters head to the polls in the state's Democratic primary on May 17.
