In a landmark speech before United States Congress in Washington, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for deeper security ties between the two countries while laying out a vision that included a prominent global role for India in maintaining stability.

His remarks seemed at odds with previous positions taken by the Indian government, which has largely been reluctant to take on a bigger role in world affairs.
