A driver in New Jersey has captured a frightening scene on video as a truck lost control on an icy highway and went careening towards his car.

The tractor trailer then turned just metres from the stationary car, crossed a guard rail, and ended up on the other side of the highway, CBS New York reported.

In the YouTube description, the driver, 27-year-old Oleg Varavko, wrote that he had been blocked in by two trucks on highway I-95 and was taking pictures as he waited for traffic to clear when he heard the sound of the truck behind him, Huffington Post reported.

"After that I came to the truck and the rest of the cars to verify they were alright," he wrote. "After arrival of NJ State Trooper and his dismissal confirming that he does not require my presence, I left the scene."

"I sure was right in the path of danger, absolutely," Varavko told CBS New York.

"It was either the end, and I was all hoping for, basically, divine intervention," he said.

Right after the close call, Varavko went to church to give thanks.
