A Ku Klux Klan chapter and a black activist group planned the overlapping demonstrations outside the state house, where South Carolina state officials had recently removed the Confederate battle flag, leading to sporadic scuffles. Officials say about 2,000 people were in the crowd. Police made five arrests.
