Turkey police disperse protesters gathered in Istanbul square for memorial

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Police in Istanbul have used water cannon to disperse thousands of people who returned to the city's central square for a memorial to those killed in nearly three weeks of anti-government protests.

The demonstrators converged at the square on Saturday, laying carnations and shouting anti-government slogans, in remembrance of three protesters and a police officer killed in the protests.

Police pushed back protesters with water cannon after warnings for them to disperse were ignored.

The demonstrations began on May 31. They had largely subsided this week, with many protesters using a new, more passive tactic to air their grievances: standing motionless.
