Swedish Princess Madeleine gives birth to daughter

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - Princess Madeleine of Sweden, the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and fourth in line to the throne, has given birth to a girl in New York, the Swedish Royal Court announced on Friday.

"Both mother and child are in good health," the court said in a statement.

The 31-year-old princess - whose full name is Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine - married US-British banker Christopher O'Neill in a lavish ceremony in Stockholm in June.

The couple live in New York and the baby is their first child.

Madeleine's sister Crown Princess Victoria is first in line to the throne, followed by her almost two-year-old daughter Estelle. Victoria's and Madeleine's brother Carl Philip is third in line.

The Swedish monarchy's popularity has fallen in recent years amid a series of scandals surrounding the king, but a majority are still in favour of the institution.
