Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has sent a condolence letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the passing of former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon.

Mr Sharon was a respected leader who dedicated his life to the security and well-being of Israel and its people, PM Lee said, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Affairs ministry here on Sunday.

"He embodied courage and resourcefulness, and served his country with honour and distinction," he wrote.

Mr Sharon's death is a great loss to Israel, PM Lee noted.

Ties between Singapore and Israel, which enjoy a longstanding friendship, have strengthened over time because of the efforts of leaders like Mr Sharon, Mr Lee said.
