The Iraqi government says 40 bodies have been found in a mass grave in Ramadi after it was retaken from Islamic State militants.

(REUTERS) - Iraqi officials say they've found a mass grave in Ramadi with the remains of more than 40 people.

Military spokesman Sa'ad Ma'an says they are the remains of policemen, women and children.

He says he knows exactly who to blame.

"This is more evidence of Islamic State crimes," he said. "The group uses various heinous and savage acts to liquidate and kill our people."

The Iraqi army freed the city from Islamic State last month.
