Mr Armin Laschet, the conservative Christian Democratic Union's (CDU) candidate for the chancellorship, has frequently warned that a cold war with China is not in Germany's best interest.

"China is a systemic rival but also a partner," he said recently. Human rights issues must be addressed, Mr Laschet added, "but we must not break off all relations because of possibly different views about how to organise society".
