Ukraine president: It's possible I'll meet Putin this week

WARSAW (REUTERS) - Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday it was possible he would meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin at commemorations in France this week to mark the anniversary of the World War Two D-Day landings. "As things stand now, a meeting between me and Putin is not envisaged, but I do not rule out that it could take place in one format or another," Poroshenko told a news conference in Warsaw.

Poroshenko said a peace plan he is working on to end the violent clashes between separatists and government forces in eastern Ukraine would include de-centralisation of power, a wide amnesty, and elections for local government.

He said he had discussed those plans with the leaders of the United States, Canada and European states during a visit to Poland, and agreed with them that those discussions would continue in Normandy, France, site of the D-day events.

Putin is among the world leaders invited to attend.
