Spanish riot police facing off against protesters during a violent demonstration in Madrid on Thursday night.

The protesters were angry over the death of a Senegalese street vendor who they said was chased through the streets by police.

They set fire to dustbins and a motorcycle, and threw stones at security forces in Lavapies, a district in the centre of the Spanish capital with a large immigrant population.

Police arrested six people and said 10 officers were injured in the unrest.

Street vendors are a fixture of Madrid.

While illegal, the trade is often the only way for many migrants to earn a living.
