MOSCOW - A perfume inspired by Russian president Vladimir Putin went on sale in Moscow on Thursday (Dec 24).

Called "Leaders Number One", the perfume for men costs around 6,000 roubles (S$119) and comes in a black bottle featuring a profile of Putin's head.

Vladislav Rekunov, a Belarus-born perfumer who came up with the product, described the fragrance: "It's a warm scent, a textured scent. It's soft but at the same time it's very firm."

According to the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, the perfume has notes of lemon, bergamot and blackcurrant.

The perfume went on sale in Moscow's GUM department store and can also be ordered online. Staff said orders had already come in from Germany and China, and they were also hoping to present a bottle to Putin himself.

The perfume makers hope to make a female version in the new year. Some of the sale proceeds will go towards helping disabled children, reports say.

Besides the perfume, a Putin calendar - with the leader in a different pose each month - also recently went on sale in Russia.

The poses, accompanied by personal quotes, include Putin hugging a puppy, shirtless while fishing, or looking determined while working out.

A cult of personality has sprung up around the Russian president in recent years, steadily gaining momentum. The president has been featured on t-shirts, mugs and other souvenirs.
