Forest with a magical bent

It seems enchanted forests are not just the stuff of fairy tales.

The Crooked Forest, outside the village of Nowe Czarnowo, in West Pomerania, Poland, is reminiscent of a scene straight out of a fantasy story.

This grove of hooked pines is made up of about 400 trees, bent at 90 degrees at their base, making a J-shape. Stranger still, all trunks are bent in the same direction: due north.

How these trees, planted in 1930, got their shape remains a mystery. One theory is that somebody did it to design bent wood to make furniture or to make barrel-making easier. Others say it is magic, or maybe even magnetic fields.

Whatever the case, this traveller could not resist trying out the snug fit of the curved trunk - perhaps to feel at one with nature.
