Britain's election: Lib Dem leader and DPM Nick Clegg retains seat, but party is humiliated

SHEFFIELD, United Kingdom (AFP) - Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg held his seat in Britain's election even as his party suffered humiliation nationwide after five years as partner to Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives.

"It is now painfully clear that this has been a cruel and punishing night for the Liberal Democrats," Mr Clegg said in a speech after being re-elected on Friday.
