Planes took to the skies on Friday in California to lampoon US presidential candidate Donald Trump in a series of "skywriting" messages, including one which read: "America is great! Trump is disgusting."

The stunt took place above the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, CNN reported. Other messages hitting out at the Republican front runner for the White House included: "Anybody but Trump", "Trump loves to hate," and "Trump is delusional."

CBS News reported that the man behind the aerial messages was millionaire real estate developer Stan Pate, who is also a donor to Florida senator Marco Rubio's presidential campaign.

"There's no place for him," he said of Mr Trump, adding that his campaign was "just beginning".

Mr Trump, whose controversial run for president has seen him call for a ban on Muslims entering the US, did not make any immediate response.

He greeted the 2016 election year by proclaiming on Facebook: "2015 was a very special year... We are making history together! The silent majority is no longer silent."
