AYACHUCHO (REUTERS) - Nine people were injured at a religious festival in Peru on Sunday (Aug 28) during a traditional bull running event.

The festival in Ayacucho Province honors patron Saint Ana.

As part of the festivities, bulls with ropes are let loose on the street and festivalgoers try to grab the rope to control the animal.

Bulls gored several residents, throwing one man up in the air while other residents tried to distract the bull.

No deaths in the bull running were reported.

Bull fighting is legal in Peru but animal activists have been fighting to outlaw the practice inherited from Spain.
