Vienna (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the Paris attacks, and other recent acts of terror, showed the world was witnessing "a kind of mediaeval and modern fascism ...which seeks to destroy and create chaos."

"The one thing we could say to those people is that what they do in this is stiffen our resolve, all of us, to fight back," Mr Kerry said, declaring the attacks had spurred diplomats gathered in Vienna for talks on Syria to "do even harder work to ... help resolve the crises that we face".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was also in Vienna, said that the string of bloody attacks in Paris justified an even stronger fight against radical militants such as the Islamic State group.

"There is no justification for terrorist acts and no justification for us not doing much more to defeat ISIS and Al-Nusra and the like," Mr Lavrov said.
