Large areas of destroyed houses in Jeremie, Haiti, bear testament to Hurricane Matthew's fury, as the scope of the devastation became clearer yesterday with the death toll reported to be at least 572.

Packing winds of 195kmh, Matthew barrelled towards Florida yesterday, lashing Nasa's rocket launch facility at Cape Canaveral, forcing power disruptions and damaging roofs with wind gusts.

A woman in her 50s reportedly died in her home in central Florida's St Lucie County, making her the first known fatality in the US from the Category 3 storm.
