Chelsea Manning to receive gender transition surgery: Lawyers

US soldier Chelsea Manning, who is serving a prison sentence for passing classified files to WikiLeaks, has ended her hunger strike after being told by the Army that she would be allowed.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Chelsea Manning has been given the green light to receive gender transition surgery.

Lawyers for the imprisoned US soldier say the Army has agreed to allow the 28-year-old to undergo the procedure.

Manning is serving a 35-year prison term for passing classified files to WikiLeaks.

The Army private who was born male revealed after being convicted that she identifies as a woman.

Her psychologist has recommended Manning receive the surgery.

The American Civil Liberties Union which represents Manning says this will be the first time a US prisoner will undergo such a surgery.
