Espresso in space, anyone? Italian astronaut orders up a cuppa as SpaceX rocket takes off

An unmanned SpaceX rocket successfully launched a capsule to the International Space Station (ISS) on Tuesday carrying an important piece of equipment - an Italian-made espresso machine ordered up by an Italian astronaut who has complained about having to drink American instant coffee for months.

The Dragon cargo ship blasted off carrying a load of food and supplies for the astronauts living in orbit aboard the ISS, Reuters and AFP reported.

The California-based company's Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 4.10am Singapore time.

The primary purpose of the flight, the 16th of a Falcon 9 rocket, is to deliver more than 1,950kg of food, clothing, equipment - including the espresso machine - and science experiments to the US$100 billion (S$136 billion) research laboratory that flies about 418km above Earth.

Study links diabetes in pregnancy to higher autism risk

Gestational diabetes affects nearly one in 10 women, and is a high blood sugar condition that arises in pregnant women who did not previously have diabetes.

Pope's iPad fetches over $40,000 at auction in Uruguay

An Apple iPad which belonged to Pope Francis fetched US$30,500 (S$41,000) at auction on Tuesday, with proceeds going to a school for the poor in Uruguay, the local auction house selling the item said.

The Castells auction house in Montevideo said the winning bid was placed by telephone, but declined to disclose the buyer's identity or nationality.

It is not the first time Pope Francis, who has often criticised orthodox market economics for fostering inequality, has donated a personal belonging. Last year, a Harley-Davidson motorbike he had received as a gift fetched 241,500 euros (S$350,000).

Tom Hanks' wife, actress Rita Wilson, undergoes double mastectomy for breast cancer

Rita Wilson, the actress and wife of actor Tom Hanks, said she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery after being diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer.

"I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion," the 58-year-old said in a statement given to People magazine on Tuesday.

Wilson said she had been regularly monitoring an underlying condition when a development in a breast biopsy showed no cancer, but prompted her to get a second opinion. Two other pathologists diagnosed invasive lobular carcinoma.
