On the outskirts of Beijing lies Dongxiaokou village, a major centre for recycling old electronic goods, or e-waste. Discarded electrical and electronic products, from abandoned air-conditioners to refrigerators, are collected and recycled mostly by migrant workers who either repair them or sell them as scrap. Those in the business in Dongxiaokou grapple with poor infrastructure and sanitation facilities, in addition to dangers associated with handling e-waste. The village is now facing demolition to make way for an ambitious urbanisation plan, and residents are worried about losing their homes and work. -- PHOTO: REUTERS

Every June 5 is World Environment Day, an initiative by the United Nations to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the environment.

It calls on people around the world to organise events to benefit the environment, whether a clean-up drive or a social media campaign.

To celebrate World Environment Day, we compile a gallery of pictures highlighting issues related to the environment around the world.
