14 injured in Kansas City gas explosion, cause unclear: Official

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) - Fourteen people have been confirmed injured in a massive gas explosion in an upscale Kansas City shopping district.

Kansas City Manager Troy Schulte said officials did not yet know if anyone was killed in the explosion, which destroyed a restaurant. The authorities also are still trying to determine the full cause of the blast.

Mr Schulte said they did know there was a gas leak followed by an explosion. At this point, he said the authorities believed it might have stemmed from an accident involving a utility contractor.

Earlier, police spokesman Rhonda Flores said it appeared that a car had crashed into a gas main near JJ's restaurant just after 6pm.

People have been cleared from the area around the restaurant.
