Multimedia: In Their Element
Nature appears to have handed them a raw deal, but Paralympic swimmers Yip Pin Xiu, 20, and Theresa Goh, 25, are defying their physical limits to achieve goals few able-bodied people dare even dream of.
Both of them are bound for the London Paralympics 2012 from Aug 29 to Sep 9 where they will be competing in the 50m and 100m freestyle under different disability categories. In the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, Pin Xiu won a gold medal in the 50m backstroke event and Theresa was placed fourth in the 100m breaststroke event.
To prepare for the upcoming Games, they are training at least seven times a week at Farrer Park Swimming Complex.
The Straits Times photojournalists Kevin Lim and Neo Xiaobin take the plunge to join them in training under water.
