Singapore: A Part of My Life (Readers' Contribution)

As Singapore marks its 47th year of independence, readers of The Straits Times celebrate the everyday connections - the places, people, memories, and yes, food - that binds us to the place we call home. How do our readers feel about Singapore? Last month, The Straits Times Picture Desk organised a National Day Special photography competition themed 'Singapore: A Part of My Life' to invite the public to send in photos of people, places, and memories that connect them to Singapore. The call for photo submissions ended on July 29, with over 200 entries received in 10 days. Here are 20 of the best submissions. Enjoy!

Once, his mosaic skin was shiny blue and children played on him. But it has been a long time since anyone climbed up to lie, dreaming, in the cocoon of his beak. This old playground at Block 35, Dover Road, is bound for demolition, along with the flats in the area, to be redeveloped en bloc. In a country with scarce land resources, Singapore's old structures are often renewed at an incredible pace. When this one is gone, only photographs will lay proof to how minimal play structures once were. This picture will always remind me of the happy times I spent in this playground as a child.
