CNY Survival Guide 2014: 8 ways you can wish people Happy New Year

How many ways can one wish friends and relatives Happy New Year in the forthcoming Year of the Horse?

Well, eight to be exact, if you watch the 46-second video produced by The Straits Times featuring people saying "happy new year, good luck in everything" in Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Foochow, Shanghainese, Hainanese and Hock Chia.

So, as you greet relatives with well wishes and two mandarin oranges during your visits, try impressing them with the different greetings.

Ms Tan Lee Keng, 65, the vice-chairman of the Teochew Poit Ip Clan Association, said that not many young Teochew people nowadays can speak Teochew. "It would be good if young people know their roots," she said.

Overcome that language barrier and reconnect with your loved ones by watching this video.
