Vettel wins Singapore Grand Prix for 2nd consecutive year
Sebastian Vettel won one of the most thrilling editions of the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday night, the world champion making the most of Lewis Hamilton's early retirement to enhance his own championship chances.
The German, whose win at the Marina Bay street circuit was his second of the season, benefited from pole sitter Hamilton's gearbox failure at the start of Lap 23.
Hamilton's team-mate Jenson Button was second for McLaren, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso third.
The result meant a reshuffle of the front runners in the drivers' championship. Alonso remains in the lead on 194 points while Vettel has moved up to second, 29 points behind the Spaniard.
Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, who was sixth, remains in third place on 149 while Hamilton has dropped down to fourth on 142.
The championship now moves to Japan.
