Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has sent a letter to US President Barack Obama, offering condolences for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

In the letter, which PM Lee also shared on his Facebook page, he said he was "deeply shocked and saddened" to hear of the shooting.

He wrote "An event like this reminds us of our common humanity, regardless of nationality or where we live in the world.

"This was a senseless loss of innocent young lives, especially since schools should be sanctuaries for our children. I wish you success in your efforts to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future."

PM Lee added: "Our thoughts are with the victims' families and all Americans during this difficult time."
