The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken to social media to try and address the frustrations of motorists using the newly-opened Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE).

On Monday morning, motorists complained about slow traffic on the $4.3 billion undersea highway. Jams formed at various sections of the expressway and the roads around them.

Some attributed it to poor design of the MCE, others to unclear road signs as well as a lack of familiarity of the expressway.

Since the expressway opened on Sunday, the LTA has sent at least eight tweets and posted twice on Facebook, providing motorists with information on the area around the expressway in the form of a map, YouTube video and an infographic.

From 9.40am on Monday, the LTA has also been directly replying to drivers who tweeted their questions regarding road changes near the Marina Bay area.

On Facebook, the LTA gave directions on travelling into the Rochor area from the MCE after some motorists asked for instructions.

The MCE connects the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) and the East Coast Parkway (ECP) in the east to the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) in the west.

LTA is one of the more active social media users among government bodies.

On Saturday, Dec 28, before the MCE opened, it sent out a few tweets ahead of the opening of the new expressway.

It offered its followers nuggets of information on the undersea expressway.

The light-hearted tone on Twitter switched to a more serious one once commuters began airing their frustrations with the slow traffic on Monday.
