COI report: SMRT admits there's room for improvement
In a statement on Wednesday evening, rail operator SMRT acknowledged that there was room for improvement in its maintenance and monitoring regime as well as work processes.
It said it has been trying to address the challenges of an ageing MRT system and higher strain from increased train runs to cater to a rapidly growing ridership.
The operator said it has studied the Committee of Inquiry report, and noted that the December breakdowns were caused by 'a confluence of factors' that caused a claw to drop and the third rail to sag, aggravating the situation.
A key factor was 'isolated and latent material defects' - specifically a third rail fastener and the coincidental existence of two adjacent insulators with defects, it said.
