The driver involved in the Little India accident on Sunday night that sparked a riot has been arrested and is out on bail, police said on Monday.

The male Singaporean driver, who was warded at Tan Tock Seng hospital earlier today, is being investigated for causing death by a negligent act.

He is understood to have been ferrying workers between Little India and a dormitory at Jalan Papan when he reversed into Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, a 33-year-old Indian national. The deceased is believed to have been drunk.

Meanwhile, the 27 suspects who have been arrested in connection with the incident are being investigated for rioting with deadly weapons, as well as vandalism.

Some 25 vehicles were damaged in the fracas, including police vehicles and SCDF vehicles. Five of the vehicles, including a traffic police bike, were set on fire by the rioters.

Police clarified that due to the nature of the incident, many of the rioters dispersed when Special Operations Command was deployed to the ground at 10.30pm. Investigations are still ongoing, and foreign worker dormitories are being monitored.

Uniformed presence in Little India has also been stepped up, said police.
