KOTA KINABALU - In a case that shocks Malaysia, a 40-year-old man charged with raping a 13-year-old girl and marrying her in the midst of the case said he saw nothing wrong with his actions.

Riduan Masmud, a restaurant manager and father of four children aged between two and 17, told reporters outside the court that it was a case of "suka sama suka" (mutual consent), adding that it was acceptable under syariah law.

Sabah's Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Jainab Ahmad yesterday said the state is taking steps to nullify the girl's marriage to her alleged rapist and to take her into the care of welfare officials.

She appealed to the prosecution to push the statutory rape charges against Riduan.
