Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

Noting criticisms of the previous outing, especially of the long introductory chapters, Black Flag throws you into the deep-end right from the start. Within two hours, you are already in command of the Jackdaw ship, as you go after ships and recruit more pirates in your quest to rule the seas.

Along with improvements in the game's graphics, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a massive endeavour that begs sailors to set sail on its gritty, grimy waters.

Beyond: Two Souls

Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe are the voices of the game's lead characters, breathing life into these virtual roles.

Page portrays tortured teen Jodie Holmes with skill and finesse. Dafoe's charisma shines through as the eager scientist and caring surrogate father Nathan Dawkins.

In the end, you will not be able to tell if it is Jodie or Page you have grown so fond of.

That alone speaks volumes about the game's strength.

Grand Theft Auto V

The Grand Theft Auto series returns and lets you switch around to control three protagonists, all criminals with storied pasts and different styles.

Trevor adores senseless violence, Michael is a retiree while Franklin is the young recruit who dreams of moving up the ladder of organised crime.

Carjacking, arson, shooting and robbery are all part of the game as you control the three anti-heroes in the world of Los Santos.

The Last of Us

If you like zombie movies, this is the creme de la creme of this genre.

It plays like a game but its real strength is in its excellent plot and patience in developing the two protagonists. Joel is a thug and smuggler for hire who lost his own daughter while running away from the undead years ago.

He meets Ellie, a girl who reminds him of his daughter, and has to try to protect her from the living dead.

Tomb Raider

This takes the gamer back to the origins of Lara Croft when she is just starting out as an archaeologist.

Fragile, lost and desperate, she must master the elements of nature as well as her inner strength to take on the enemies.

This reboot adds action and substance to the franchise. The usual visual treats are here, from a robust island environment to the varied levels and puzzles.
