PAS' Nik Aziz supports Anwar as prime minister, says Nurul Izzah
KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Parti Islam SeMalaysia spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat supports opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister should the opposition alliance form the federal government in the general election, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar.
This comes following the distribution of a letter from renowned Islamic scholar Dr Yusuf Al Qaradawi, head of the Doha-based International Union of Muslim Scholars, in support of Mr Anwar becoming the prime minister.
"For me, when he (Nik Aziz) accepted and announced the letter, it is an indication of his support," Ms Nurul Izzah, who is Mr Anwar's eldest daughter, told reporters.
The four-page latter was directed to PAS, PKR and "friends from the Chinese party". PKR, PAS and the Chinese-majority Democratic Action Party (DAP) form the opposition Pakatan Rakyat alliance.
In it, Dr Yusuf expressed support of Pakatan Rakyat's sympathetic stand towards Mr Anwar while praising his leadership abilities.
"He (Anwar) is the most eligible to assume the leadership and the most eligible to implement the demands of the nation at this crucial juncture to develop Malaysia in every aspect," he said in his letter.
