THE 23-year-old gang rape victim from India remains in an "extremely critical condition" at Mount Elizabeth Hospital's intensive care unit.

In addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen, "as well as significant brain injury", said Dr Kelvin Loh, the hospital's chief executive officer.

"The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life," he said.

He added that a multi-disciplinary team of specialists has been working tirelessly to treat her since her arrival yesterday, "and is doing everything possible to stabilise her condition over the next few days".

The medical student was flown into Singapore from New Delhi, where the attack occurred last week, to seek further medical treatment here.
