A very good run for your money

There are two versions of the Under Amour SpeedForm Gemini 2 shoes. This is the normal version, and not the Record Equipped version that has a chip that tracks runs. Those were announced in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but are only available in the US for now.

The original SpeedForm Gemini was my favourite Under Armour footwear, and this follow-up does not disappoint.

The wrap-around upper remains. Unlike other running shoes with uppers made of sewn pieces of fabric, the Gemini 2 uses an elastic material that wraps around your foot like a sock. And all I need is a thin pair of socks, as the shoes are already very cushy on their own.

The elastic material is flexible enough to enable movement, yet taut enough to hold my foot in place whether I am running down a slope or walking on a trail.

The soles on the Gemini 2 are relatively thick and offer great impact absorption.

The sole's thickness is about the same as that of the original Gemini, but the heel guard is slightly bigger and taller, so there is a nice and snug grip of my heels when I move my feet around. There is also the use of UA's Arch Foam on the arch and heel of the shoe, for added support, though its presence was hardly felt during my short runs.

The biggest change is in the toe box. The first version has a smaller toe box, and I had to buy a pair a half-size larger. The Gemini 2 has more wiggle room in the toe area, so I'm back to my regular shoe size.

If you need a new pair of running shoes, the Gemini 2 offers a new level of comfort and grip, alongside an eye-catching design.

• Verdict: Both versions of the Gemini shoes are cut from the same cloth, with minimal updates on the new model. If you loved the first, you will love this follow-up.
