SAN FRANCISCO - Apple has updated its iPhone series with the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.

Both new iPhones look very much like the previous two generations, except for the antenna bands being more streamlined around the edges instead of spanning over the rear of the phones.

There is no headphone jack. Both iPhones will come with a pair of EarPod with Lightning connector instead. However, a Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone jack is included, so users can still use their usual headphones.

At the same time, Apple also introduced the AirPods, a truly wireless headset without a cable connecting the two earbuds.

Apart from the difference in screen sizes, the iPhone 7 Plus features a dual-lens camera system using two 12-megapixel image sensors with a f/1.8 lens each. Each camera has a different focal length - a wide-angle and a telephoto lens - for 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. In addition, the dual-lens camera enables shallow depth of field.

The iPhone 7 might not have the dual-lens camera system but it features one new 12-megapixel camera with a faster f/1.8 lens that lets in twice more light than its predecessor.

They will run on the new A10 Fusion quad-core processor for 40 per cent faster performance over its predecessor. Both iPhones are also supposed to have a longer battery life - around up to two more hours than its predecessors.

In addition, both iPhones' lowest storage capacity start from 32GB instead of the previous 16GB. The highest storage capacity is also being increased from 128GB to 256GB.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are now available in five colours instead of the previously four. The silver, gold and rose gold models remain, where the space grey version is retired. Instead, there are two new black models -  black and jet black.

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will be available in silver, gold, rose gold and the new black finish in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models starting at SRP S$1,048, and the new jet black finish will be offered exclusively on the 128GB and 256GB models from Apple.com/sg, Apple Authorised Resellers and select carriers.
